![]() ![]() Not sure what I can do if it is a bad HD though. I ran a previous version of Xubuntu on a pIII 650 with 256 meg and it was lightning fast compared to this - the difference in speed/ram can't account for the difference. I think it must be errors on the drive b/c it took for ever to even install xubuntu (well over an hour). I'll do a little research on the fsck tool and try it out. Is there a linux application I can use to test the drive for bad sectors? Any help would be appreciated. I ran gOS from the CD and all the eye candy worked reasonably well - so I don't think its a processor problem. It seems to have sufficient processor power since applications run well enough when in ram. I suspect that there are bad sectors on the drive which results in a dramatic decrease in performance when ever the HD is accessed. I think there is something wrong with the HD since reading and writing to the drive takes for ever (it took Xubuntu over an hour to install). The bios on the machine is up to date, and the ram, while a little less than 256 meg, should be sufficient. Sound won't work, but everything else seems to (well, the frame around tuxpaint looks a little wonky on it). As long as the HD is not accessed, it seems responsive enough. Running Xubuntu is as slow as molasses - particularly when the HD is accessed. I have an old IBM 600e with a Pentium II 366, 192meg, 6 gig HD. ![]()
